Ch 9

 Chapter 9: Repay with Determination

It's way too abstract!

Shen Miaomiao couldn't help but exclaim in her mind.

If the initial impression of Catrio was trashy, then Gu Sheng's new project was just absurd.

After all, Catrio was a derivative work of Mario, and regardless of the quality of the game, you could at least get a sense of what it was, the basic gameplay, and the game objectives at first glance.

But this new project!

Shen Miaomiao couldn't even imagine what kind of game it was based on Gu Sheng's description!

A mischievous child trying to die while the father tries to stop them?

Where's the fun in that?

Shen Miaomiao couldn't understand and even started to worry about Gu Sheng's mental state.

However!

Without a doubt, this inexplicable game had no selling point.

Gu Sheng had chosen a niche path for the game, and with the bizarre gameplay design, it would be difficult not to incur losses.

Thinking of this, Shen Miaomiao couldn't help but feel happy.

Well, whatever the game is, the more outrageous it is, the more advantageous it is for her!

This time, she must make up for the profits she missed out on in Catrio!

Repay with determination!

So she nodded:

"Very well, I like this idea (even though I didn't understand it)."

"Director Gu, you can proceed with the project. Feel free to make any requests, especially regarding the investment. The company will fully support and meet your needs!"

What a great boss!

Upon hearing this, Gu Sheng internally gave a big thumbs up.

From Little Nezha's expression, it was clear that she didn't understand this game at all, looking completely confused and lost.

However!

Little Nezha still chose to believe in herself, just like she believed in the answers the teacher provided in math class. Whether she understood it or not, she simply nodded along and said, "Yes, yes, yes."

Having a boss like this, what more could one ask for in life!

Gu Sheng silently vowed in his heart to make the company orderly so as not to let down Little Nezha's trust!

Thinking of this, Gu Sheng nodded:

"Thank you for your trust, Boss. Since we're on the topic, I have a small request."

"No problem, go ahead. The company will support whatever you need."

Shen Miaomiao nodded, indicating that Gu Sheng could speak.

Gu Sheng smiled awkwardly, seeming a bit embarrassed:

"Well, you see, because this project has a much larger scale than Catrio, I think we should expand the team accordingly."

"A complete game development team should include a lead engineer responsible for engine development and programming, as well as a lead artist responsible for scene UI and character modeling. Since some future projects may involve trade secrets, it's not suitable to outsource all the work."

In fact, he left out the position of lead game designer.

The lead game designer was usually responsible for gameplay design, level design, and story logic structure, among other things.

But since the games he obtained from the system were almost semi-finished products, including core gameplay and story design, Gu Sheng also took on the role of lead game designer. It was a way to save money for the company while ensuring the authenticity of the game to the maximum extent.

After all, if Gu Sheng held both the positions of producer and lead game designer, it meant that he fully grasped the core architecture of the game, becoming the true soul of the game.

After hearing Gu Sheng's suggestion, Shen Miaomiao nodded repeatedly.

Good! Very good!

Our director is growing up and knows how to spend money for the company!

Immediately, she waved her hand:

"Director Gu's proposal is excellent! Let's do it this way!"

With that, Shen Miaomiao turned to Chu Qingzhou:

"Secretary Chu, start recruiting according to Director Gu's requirements. Look for experienced and capable candidates. Salary and benefits are not an issue. The more expensive, the better!"

You see!

According to the system's rules, the salary of the main person in charge, as an investment executor, was not taken into account when determining the investment amount. However, any personnel input other than the main person in charge would be considered an investment!

In other words, the more expensive the team members that Gu Sheng recruited for game development, the greater the investment amount!

And the harder it would be to recover the investment!

The more rebates she would receive!

Of course, personnel hiring would still have to follow certain market prices, and they couldn't hire a dog with a million-dollar salary, as that would be considered cheating.

So, Shen Miaomiao instructed Chu Qingzhou to recruit top talents, thus increasing the investment amount.

However, before Chu Qingzhou could respond, Gu Sheng interjected:

"Um... what I mean is, maybe we don't need to go to such great lengths?"

With that statement, both Shen Miaomiao and Chu Qingzhou were taken aback.

"What do you mean?" Shen Miaomiao shrugged, not understanding Gu Sheng's intention.

Gu Sheng smiled and said, "What I mean is, instead of hiring those so-called 'industry elites' who frequently job-hop, why don't we cultivate a team that belongs to our company?"

"A team belonging to the company?"

The two at the meeting table exchanged glances.

Chu Qingzhou asked, "Director Gu, are you suggesting that we hire new talent?"

"Yes," Gu Sheng nodded, "Compared to those so-called 'industry elites,' I would prefer to build a new team."

Gu Sheng's consideration could be said to be very thorough.

What kind of place was this?

A parallel world.

To be more specific, it was a parallel world with a lack of game ideas and rigid game genres.

Game development is a creative art industry.

However, in this world, those so-called 'elites' were merely a group of mechanical laborers bound by fixed thinking patterns.

When they saw the success of "Fireline Shuttle," they believed that shooter games could only have a crosshair in the center of the screen, fixed health at 100, and objectives focused on defusing bombs.

When they saw the success of "Ultimate Racing," they believed that racing games could only be about speed, with flashy vehicles and various upgrades, pursuing the ultimate in performance.

Little did they know!

Gunplay in games could include realistic aiming mechanisms, health regeneration could quicken the pace of the game, and game objectives didn't necessarily have to revolve around that bomb that had been defused ten thousand times.

Driving games didn't have to be all about racing. Players could choose heavy-duty trucks as their vehicles, and the neglected scenery in races could provide a relaxed and enjoyable experience.

Gu Sheng had many games planned for the future.

He hoped that his game development team could open their minds, make an effort to understand the attributes of the ninth art of games, and not limit their perspective to "Will this game make money?" or "Is this game mainstream?" or "Does this game have a market?"

Games could be tedious, after all. Their essence consisted of zeros and ones, a series of tasteless code.

But games could also be marvelous, because within those countless combinations of zeros and ones, they contained the sunset scenery of the Alps, the grandeur of Nordic mythology, the passionate heroism of saving the world, and the contemplation of human nature revealed by unveiling the truth hidden behind the fog.

This was the kind of game that Gu Sheng loved.

"So I'm requesting the company to give my two friends a trial. They share the same passion for creativity in the game industry as I do."
